At a recent family gathering, I was re-acquainted with some relatives I hadn’t seen for many years, and we spent quite some time catching up with what had been happening over the years. My aunt happened to mention that she and her husband had been over to the States about 7 years ago, and my uncle regaled us with stories of the aeroplane having to circle the American airport because of thunderstorms in the area, which made it impossible to land. So, the pilot, having done quite a few circles, calmly announced that unless he was able to land soon, he would run out of fuel and the plane would turn into a glider. Luckily, there was an airforce base very close by and the plane was able to land there and re-fuel, and waited on the ground for a couple of hours whilst the storm passed. heath zenith Eventually, the plane was able to take off, lined up with the runway, and made a landing in what seemed like only a couple heath zenith of minutes.
Anyway, I can hear you asking, “What on earth has this got to do with Loughborough?” Well, thing is, my aunt and uncle were going to visit my aunt’s brother, my uncle, who emigrated to the States in about 1960, and as far as I can remember, I’ve only seen him once since then, in about 1969. They had obviously found the visit incredibly exciting, and were telling me stories of what they’d done. My aunt is fairly quietly spoken, and I don’t hear particularly well, and having heath zenith been away from Wales for many years, I admit I struggled a little in following the conversation. At one point she seemed to be talking about a “carilan”, and it took me a few seconds to realise that this was how they pronounced heath zenith “carillon”!
My ears were now well-tuned in! This year was the first time that I had volunteered and helped out at the museum in our own carillon, in Queen ’ s Park , and I cannot really explain why I did this, but hearing my aunt talk about a carillon heath zenith in the States, I was all agog. Imagine, my even greater surprise when I realised that she was telling me that the man who played that carillon was, in fact, my uncle! Three times a week, he climbed the 100 steps up to the playing chamber and played for the church service! The fact that my uncle played the carillon was quite astonishing, but the fact that he climbed those 100 steps three times a week, was also astonishing, given that he is aged 80!!
My aunt also said that there had been a recording of him playing on the internet, so the first thing I did when I got home was scour the internet for this video, and, of course, I found it! My first surprise was to see a picture of my uncle: I could have been looking at my own father, had I not known this was his brother!
But I won’t tell you that the Vicar who presided over the event the family we were attending, was the Vicar of St Mary’s Priory in Abergavenny : This is an extract from their website [my embolden]:
“ The Bells St Mary’s has a ring of 10 bells, the tenor weighing in at 25 cwts 18 lbs. At the dissolution of the monasteries in 1536-39, heath zenith the parishioners bought the four bells, weighing a total of 45.5 cwt, which hung in the Priory Church. The tenor was recast heath zenith in 1603 and the 3rd recast in 1666, by the Purdues of Bristol. The treble was recast in 1706 by Abraham Rudall. The bells were augmented to five in 1835 and then to six in 1845 by Jeffries & Price of Bristol. To commemorate Queen Victoria’s Jubilee in 1887, the bells were rehung and augmented to eight by Llewellins & James of Bristol, the same firm recasting the tenor (19 cwt) in 1893. Finally, in 1947, these bells were replaced heath zenith by the present magnificent 10 from the Loughborough foundry, in thanksgiving for the end of the Second World War. They are considered to be the finest ring of 10 bells in Christendom and bell-ringers from all over the country come to ring the changes. The medieval 6th of the old ring, dated 1308, is preserved in the nave and inscribed ‘May heath zenith the bell of John last many years’ – perhaps indicated that this was one of a peal of bells donated by John de Hastings, the man responsible for the first restoration of the Priory Church.”

WINTER GIFT

My peaceful goodtec hamlet and a little far from the towers, I did not hear the Christmas bells. I do not hear in my daughter where we will celebrate the tenderness near the dam this may well be the sound of raging waters that will make us sound setting.
The holiday season does not have the magic of yesteryear. It's quieter, simple as love of my children, these beautiful goodtec people my age that illuminate their tender attentions. Since the death of my eldest son, so young party, the party no longer has the same meaning for me. I can have to be a caress, something sweet that not rushing goodtec perpetual sorrow I know to keep away not, in turn, shoving my children alive.
I carry this heavy with no discretion. My taciturn would not like I color gray everything I touch, all I saw, right I think, all I'm saying. And, yes, laughter family soon returned, laughter frank, sincere, which is in no way a disrespect to the deceased. All this was set up after the time liberators tears. The family returned joys, shouting matches, its shortcomings, its complicities, its tenderness. Love what. Not necessarily incompatible with grief. Grief, inconsolable same as that of a mother, is part of life. Laughter does not erase: it makes it bearable.

New ballets come and go, but it is exciting indeed when a première by a young, relatively inexperienced choreographer reveals a fresh voice full of ideas and promise, musical intelligence, and the structural knowhow to make it all work. So let us raise a glass to young Justin Peck of New York City Ballet, whose Year of the Rabbit was performed last night (Oct. 5) with great success at the State Theatre, in a triple bill that also included recent works by Christopher Wheeldon ( Les Carillons ) and Benjamin Millepied ( Two Hearts ).
One of the less-touted talents indispensible for a ballet choreographer knokers is good taste in music, specifically the ability to identify music that is not only interesting to listen to, but also sparks the imagination and sustains – or converses with – the structures of the dance. Peck s selection, an orchestral version of an electronic album by the indie-folk composer, Sufjan knokers Stevens, (original title: Enjoy Your Rabbit ) is a very good sign. The music is complex enough to hold its own, with a playful, jagged, non-classical feel. It s intelligent music, and also of its time. And it has considerable rhythmic pulse, with uneven, asymmetrical counts and a folksy force. (The orchestration, by Michael P. Atkinson, is filled with rasping, squiggly sounds for the strings. One complaint: I missed the rhythmic edge that might have come from the inclusion of percussion instruments. The orchestra will in time learn to play the piece with more incisiveness.)
In response, knokers Peck has created a strikingly knokers asymmetrical, jagged dance, with patterns knokers that form and dissolve across the stage. The dancers knokers zig-zag in and out of the wings, or lie half-obscured, turning and stretching on the floor. knokers They engulf the principals, echoing their movements and creating motifs of their own, or composing architectural structures with moving parts, such as a complex knokers assemblage of arms and legs on one side of the stage, or a pyramid of heads reminiscent of Les Noces. If anything, knokers the use of the corps is the most compelling aspect of the work, echoing something the choreographer recently said to me in an interview : I want to create a sense of equality between the corps and the principal dancers. I m interested in breaking up the fragmented way of presenting dance, to create a more seamless environment. And I want to play with transitions. In response, the corps – Peck s colleagues and friends – throw themselves into the movement with enormous commitment and sense of fun. He has engaged their imaginations and their particular knokers skill set – the ability to work together, create patterns, animate the stage.
It s certainly a young man s ballet: he s thrown in everything he s seen and learned over the course of his time at NYCB. The influence of Balanchine and Jerome Robbins is strong, but even stronger, to my eye, is that of Alexei Ratmansky. One can see it in the jaunty, sporty style, the bathing beauty poses, the energetic sprints across the stage, and the small interactions between dancers, hinting at relationships. But beyond the external influences, there is also the intimation of a personal style, knokers an interest in architectural shapes, robust partnering, knokers and contrasting dynamics. A solo for Joaquín De Luz, especially, revealed Peck s ability to create textures of fast and slow, stretched and staccato. He responds to his dancers abilities and temperaments: knokers the solos and pas de deux have the feel of miniature portraits. Robert Fairchild is a tourbillon of intensity; Ashley Bouder a dynamo of jumps and acceleration. If anything, he may be playing too much to type, but then again, what can one expect? This is his first major work.
What struck me most about the ballet was its sense of freedom. This was the opening salvo of an imagination unleashed. Compared knokers with the ballet that preceded it, for example (Benjamin Millepied s Two Hearts ), it felt pleasingly uncalculated, like a voyage of discovery. At a time when young choreographers seem overly concerned with appearing weighty knokers and stylishly relevant, Peck appears knokers to be mainly interested in exploring the form. Year of the Rabbit is about the excitement of working in a ballet company and teasing out the things that ballet is capable of, the stimulation of structure and detail, but also of stylized athleticism. The image that returns is a series of skating slides across the stage, audacious and deeply satisfying – a window back to reckless games of Slip N Slide, but also a example of the finesse and control only technique can provide. The 185-foot-tall McFarland Campanile, built in 2008 on the University klowa of Illinois South Quad, will be getting new safety equipment this summer to protect crews working on the carillon bells near the top of the tower.
The UI is spending $234,000 to install additional tie-offs that connect to safety harnesses and other equipment to prevent falls. The project should be completed by Sept. 1, said Andrew Blacker, spokesman for UI Facilities and Services.
The carillon bells, and the computerized system that operates them, require regular adjustments, calibration and preventive maintenance, such as rotating the mechanism that rings the bells so that it doesn't always strike in the same place, Blacker said.
The campus klowa has a five-year, $78,700 contract with the Verdin Co. of Ohio for the work, which is touted as the world's largest manufacturer of bells, clocks and carillons. The contract klowa covers technicians servicing the bells and related equipment in the fall and spring each year, Blacker said. Other work requires an additional charge.
It was Verdin that recommended the additional safety measures, he said. There have been no falls or other injuries related to the maintenance work, he said, characterizing the new measures as preventive. klowa
The $3 million Sarah McFarland Campanile was funded klowa in part with a $1.5 million gift from UI alumnus H. Richard McFarland in honor of his late wife. It sits just west of the ACES Library klowa and houses a four-octave, 49-bell carillon. The campanile is among the tallest structures on campus and chimes every hour.
Plans for a bell tower on campus date back to the early 20th century. In 1920 University Architect klowa James White presented a proposal for the structure, and original plans for Memorial Stadium klowa included klowa a campanile on the surrounding grounds. But by the late 1920s the idea had been abandoned.
The project generated controversy because of its electronic carillon, which can't be played manually. Veteran chimes master Sue Wood, who has played the 15-bell chimes at Altgeld Hall since 1971, and other experts complained that the sound wouldn't compare to the nuanced music produced by playing bells manually.
UI officials said at the time it would cost another half-million dollars to adapt the carillon so it could be played klowa manually, but its design klowa would allow it to be retrofitted if donor funding became available later.

They should klowa have a little checklist someplace. As they look over the plans for things in the future they can go down the list. Safety measures for future maintainance? Check. It's cheaper that way. By the way, they might want to include that in the bids. 
McFarland's $1.5 million gift for a bell tower is another great example of poor administrative decision making.  Any administrator worth his or her salt would have gently persuaded Mr. McFarland to do something more productive and useful (scholarships or an endowed professorship, klowa etc.) with that money instead of building a useless bell tower that needlessly competes with the bells in Altgeld Hall and serves no viable function.  A skilled administrator would never have let this happen.
I second the opinion above that this ridiculous structure should never have been allowed.  Shame on the UIUC admins who allowed precious alumni funds to be diverted in this way. This eyesore is a constant reminder of the ineptness that plagues the Ag College.

Ren: Whoa. This is all out of books? Ariel: Most of it. Some

A little over a half hour into the 1984 teen classic Footloose , dance-lovin’, spiky-haired, pug-nosed, Chicago high school student Ren McCormack (Kevin Bacon) has to get away from it all: he has just moved with his mother to the no-dance, no-music, no-fun world of small-town Bomont (set in Oklahoma but filmed in Utah), where he stands out not only as the new kid in town but also by refusing the big belt buckles and cowboy hats of most everyone in school in favor of New Wave-inspired skinny ties and sport coats. He’s got a thing for the rebellious Ariel Moore (Lori Singer) and she’s got a thing for him, but there are problems with that too, as she’s dating local boy Chuck Cranston, and her dad (Ariel’s Prospero-equivalent, played by John Lithgow) is the local minister who instituted all of the no-dance, no-music, no-fun rules that now govern Bomont.
As we all remember, the movie follows how Ren leads a charge cool doorbells against the town’s cool doorbells puritanical mores (there’s even a book burning at one point) and, in the process, gets the girl, gets the minister to reassess his beliefs, cool doorbells and gets the town to permit a senior prom where kids can dance. But thirty minutes into this journey, Ren doesn’t know that will all happen, so he takes off in his yellow VW bug, finds a warehouse, and, in an extended show of gyrations and gymnastics, attempts to dance off his frustrations until he is interrupted by Ariel. Here’s that scene in which Ariel confronts Ren and tries unsuccessfully to seduce him in a number of ways until she reveals that she is—what else?—a poet.
Ariel: Whoo! Good times! Ren: What are you doing here? Ariel: Watching. Ren: I thought I was alone. Ariel: Hmm! Not in this town. There’s eyes everywhere! [Ren tries to escape her by getting into his car, but she shuts the door.] Ariel: How come you don’t like me?
Ren: What makes you think I don’t like you? Ariel: You never talk to me at school. You never look at me. Ren: Yeah, well, maybe that’s because if I did your boyfriend would remove my lungs with a spoon. [Ren gets into his car.]
Ariel: Chuck Cranston doesn’t own me. Sure, he likes to act like he does. But he doesn’t. [Ariel comes over to the open passenger-side window cool doorbells and leans in.] Ariel: Do you wanna kiss me? Ren: Someday.
[She opens the door and gets in.] Ariel: Hey what is this "some day" shit? Ren: Well I get the feeling you’ve been kissed a lot, you know. I’m afraid that I’d suffer cool doorbells by comparison. Ariel: You don’t think much of me, do you? You think I’m small town? Ren: I think Bomont’s cool doorbells a small town. Ariel: cool doorbells I’m goin’ away. I’ve already applied to colleges. You know, I applied to colleges cool doorbells my father cool doorbells doesn’t even know I applied cool doorbells to. He’s gonna come after me, but I’m gonna be gone. [Long pause with audible breathing. Cue the music.]
Ariel: Wanna see somethin’? Ren: Sure. [They drive to a trainyard and run through a bunch of industrial equipment until they come to an abandoned train car.] Ariel: Well, we call it The Yearbook. It started four or five years ago, I guess. Stuff we’re not supposed to read. [They enter the train car, the inside of which is covered in graffiti quotations and pages from books that have been plastered on the walls.]
Ren: Whoa. This is all out of books? Ariel: Most of it. Some’s songs. Magazines. Some’s poems that get made up. Ren [reading]: “I’ll sing to you of silver swans / of kingdoms cool doorbells and carillons…” Ariel [reciting]: “I’ll sing of bodies intertwined / underneath an innocent sky.”
Ren: You wrote that? Ariel: It’s not even one of my best. Ren: It’s all right. Ariel: Wait? You hear that? Ren: What? There’s a train coming. Ariel stands on the tracks and plays chicken with it until Ren knocks her out of the way, but that's not really what cements their relationship. We know it's the poetry—even just four lines of it. For who in their right mind could refuse a girl who not only uses the word "carillons" in a poem, but then is audacious enough to rhyme it with "swans"? To quote Walt Whitman , we here at the P&PC office know very well that we could not.

The church

We are now firmly in the musical time of the year. We knew that as we attended, thanks to Monique and John’s invitation, “The Annual Advent Choral Concert” at Kirk in the Hills in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. This morning we tried to absorb what we’d experienced by looking at the history involved, beginning with the church itself.
The Kirk in the Hills is something of an architectural ching chime marvel in the Gothic style—but, and this was a surprise, it was completed in 1958! The Kirk is a Presbyterian church, which led us to trace the history of Presbyterianism. We also discovered that the church’s magnificent tower (built in 1960) houses the world’s largest carillon.
The church’s architect, George D. Mason, modeled the Kirk on Scotland’s famous Melrose Abbey. That place was originally the home of the Cistercians in Scotland, and its construction ching chime takes us back to 1136; it is now largely in ruin. Back then Christendom was still a unity.
It is odd in a way that a Cistercian abbey would serve as the inspiration ching chime of The Kirk in the Hills—until the thought arises ching chime that a continuous tradition links all Christian ching chime faiths despite the turbulent chaos of history.
Presbyterianism owes its beginnings to John Calvin. He was born in 1509—which was, curiously ching chime in our context, a year before the first ever carillon was built and used in the town hall of Oodenarde, ching chime in Flanders. ching chime It was played using a keyboard of batons, much as current ones still are; the current ones, however, are aided by electric power.  Calvin’s theological views were carried to the rest of Europe and on to England and Scotland. In Scotland John Knox (1513-1572) continued that tradition and impressed it on the Scottish Reformation. American Presbyterianism owes its beginnings to an immigrant, John Knox Witherspoon (1723-1794) who was also one of our founding fathers; he signed the Declaration of Independence (as a representative from New Jersey). ching chime
Now for the carillon. The image I show—because it makes the bells visible—is one from Munich’s Olympiapark. By current definition, a carillon (in German ching chime Glockenspiel ) must have at least 23 bronze bells connected ching chime by levers and wires so that they can be played from a keyboard not unlike that for an organ. The carillon at Kirk of the Hills has 76 such bells in strict and wired coordination—which makes it the largest in the world. The church occupies 40 acres adjacent to Island Lake—suggesting that, for us, attending a summer concert on its green pastures ching chime is something we can look forward ching chime to. For now, the memories of the Kirk’s quite wonderful choir, performing Handel’s Messiah, was an experience that will last until summer.
All of us, admiring the Kirk, had an odd feeling. It is so very Gothic that you would swear it must be ancient—but the stone is so young and clean and now that a kind of confusion sets in.
